It is customary in my culture to never enter a house empty handed. Whether it is a box of candy, chocolate bar or bottle of wine, we make sure we have something for the head of the household. On the other hand, what if you were invited to a party, say a surprise birthday party in honor of someone else at someone's house, do you get something only for the guest of honor, for the host or both? Answer: BOTH.

Why both you may ask? Obviously, you would get something for the guest of honor. On the other hand, the person hosting the party is providing their home, time and plain hosting, a gift shows that appreciation. Ultimately, it is just not proper etiquette to enter someone's house emptyhanded.
